Dear Fairmont Charter School Families,

On Monday, August 21, 2017 all of North America will be treated to a solar eclipse.  Northern California will experience 75%-80% of the eclipse between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.  While this is an exciting event, even momentary glimpses of the sun can be unsafe for our eyes. It is important students are aware that they should not look directly at the sun unless they are taking proper precautions. The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers.

We ask that you spend time talking to your child/children about how to safely view this event. Here at Fairmont Charter School, we will be doing the same. Classroom teachers will plan activities accordingly for their class. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have specific questions.

Another note… you are welcome to send your child/children to school with a pair of eclipse glasses. We do advise you to ensure they are purchased from a reputable vendor and that they meet the International Safety standard (ISO 12312-2).

August 21 Eclipse Resources!

On August 21 all of America will experience a solar eclipse. Some areas will witness a total eclipse (when the moon entirely covers the sun); other regions will witness a partial eclipse.

The Bay Area will experience a 76% eclipse, with the moon beginning to cover the sun at 9:01 am, reaching maximum coverage at 10:15 am, and then moving away from the sun at 11:37 am.

Some schools have made plans for students to go outside and watch the eclipse using special solar eclipse glasses and/or cards for pinhole viewing. Please check your school's website to see what kinds of activities are planned.

If you want to send your child to school with glasses for viewing the eclipse, please be sure to provide designated solar eclipse glasses. Staring at even a sliver of the sun without adequate protection can cause permanent eye damage. (You can find more information about choosing safe glasses on the American Astronomical Society's website.)

The following websites have lots of layperson-friendly eclipse information to share with your families and friends:
